I'm looking for a gene in a species hosted on the Ensembl website, it was previously there but searching for it now doesn't turn up anything. Is there any way to check if I'm just missing it, or if the annotation/gene is now gone?

Are you searching the same reference build that you used to identify the gene in the first place?

That is sort of the question that I'm asking, if a new build of a species drops a gene, how do I tell if the search by name tool isn't working, or if they've actually dropped it.

If you've got the Ensembl ID you can quickly find it with www.ensembl.org/id/ENS####

I ended up finding it, but I had to search for that gene in another related species, then enter the homology tree and get to my target gene from there. I'm not sure why, but not matter the term I use (HGNC symbol, alt symbols, full name) it won't show up in my species of interest.
