Last year, I asked the Biostar community for some suggestions for a course about Next Generation Sequencing technologies. There were a bunch of good ideas: ( http://biostar.stackexchange.com/questions/3355/i-am-preparing-a-course-on-ngs-any-suggestion )

My slides are still available on slideshare at: http://www.slideshare.net/lindenb/20101210-ngscourse

Here I wonder what have been the notable achievements, papers ,products for the NGS since last year.

In my list:

  • Exome sequencing < 999$

23andme99

Any other idea ?

Many thanks !

Pierre

In regards to Moore's Law, I always liked this image:

I think the assemblathon paper is interesting if you're also covering assembly.

You might mention the recently published genomes of Serpula lacrymans, Cannabis sativa, the 1k1 genomes of Arabidopsis, the potatoe genome (Solanum tuberosum), and for sure many others. All were published within the last year!

From an application side, How about discussing application of NGS with a focus on personal genomics ?

You could start with Russ B. Altman's Translational Bioinformatics: 2011 Year in review
