Hi All,

I'm gathering information about the Masters or similar level programs in Bioinformatics, Comp Biology etc. that are offered as distance education, preferably by Universities located in EU.

I've found so far the Manchester Uni in UK (MSc in Digital Biology) and Polytechnic Institute of NY (Bioinformatics, MS: NYU-ePoly). Is that all that exists?

Maybe someone has studied, or knows someone who have studied, or works for such a University ...

(Similar, but not the same as What is the best site to find Masters and Graduate programs in Bioinformatics?)

I'm fairly certain that the Manchester one is the only distance bfx masters in the UK at the moment; I thought Cranfield did one but I was mistaken. There may be some bioinformatics in the distance statistics MSc at Sheffield or the Intelligent Systems one at DMU. There aren't many distance MSc courses at all in the UK (I'm doing an OU maths one at the moment, but they don't touch computational biology in any of their science masters). Nonetheless, the Manchester MSc sounds rather popular (6 years at 2-3 grand per annum seems a bit steep)

There's usually a good number of stipends for bioinformatics courses, though I expect these would only be available to full time students.

sorry I can't be much more help, Russ

Birkbeck does one as well I think (not sure). Cranfield doesn't, I've been there (but they do part-time).

Check out the University of Illinois at Chicago distance engineering masters with a bioinformatics specialization. It's obviously not in the UK, but it is online.

I went through it in three years part time. I found it challenging and useful.

Good luck!

how are the career prospects, though? I am looking at pursuing an MSc through distance learning, but am afraid that it might be looked down upon over MScs pursued by on-site education.

Just an update if anyone visits this topic - I'm taking "Bioinformatics for Systems Biology" from Manchester starting this week.

Too early to give feedback, but I'll try to remember and comment this post somewhat later - maybe next year. :)

I graduated in Agricultural Sciences B.Sc) , 4 year degree course, from Tamilnadu Agricultural University (TNAU) during 1987-1991, with 3.56 out of 4.0 CGPA (81.4%) and have been working in the IT industry for the past 19 years.

I would like to further my studies now and would like to enroll myself for the Part time M Tech Bioinformatics course, leading to PhD in good a University.

Can anyone help me with some links..

Raja
