At present I am pursuing my Bachelor's degree in biotechnology. Bioinformatics has been my favourite subject so far and I would love to pursue it further but then I am a bit confused whether it is of any use for me as at the end I will join an IT company. I have always been good at programming and know most of the languages and I am planing on doing a short term course in bioinformatics. I just want to know a little bit about the future of this path if i choose it.

Hi Manisha,

I have a Bacholers degree in Information Technology and A a Master degree in Computer and Information Sciences. Yet when I decided to enter into bioinformatics field, I had same doubts as yours. But it is such an interesting field, that I went for it. Now as far as future of this or any other field`s path is concerned, I remember a quote from H. Jackson Brown that

Opportunity dances with those already on the dance floor

Regarding the future of bioinformatics, its a very promising field and have tremendous opportunities in US and Europe. It is one of the hottest upcoming field in India. This post in Nature will definitely clear many of your doubts.

In spite of being young, the science of Bioinformatics exhibits tremendous potential for playing a major role in the future development of science and technology. This is evident from the fact that modern biology and related sciences are increasingly becoming dependent on this new technology. It is expected that Bioinformatics will especially contribute in the future as the leading edge in biomedicine to pharmaceutical companies by expediently yielding a greater quantity of lead drugs for therapy.source
