Is there any journal where you can post small programs to solve very specific tasks?

Let's say you write a script for a very specific task in your work, but that could be useful for someone else in your line of work, other bioinformaticians or biologist, and because of that you want to publish it in some journal or specialized scientific communication.

Is that even possible, which publishers or journals would you use to do that?

Or because it is just a small task you wouldn't even bother in trying to report it.

Just post the code on github and advertise it with a "tool" post here. In all but the most tragic cases, a solid github repo is more important than a handful of crappy publications.

A "Software Tools Article" on F1000research might do the trick ( http://f1000research.com/for-authors/article-guidelines ). Source codes is encouraged to be on github and similar but also requires submission to another (more permanent?) repo.

Have look here: http://billmills.github.io/blog/full-stack/ About an open science infrastructure and especially zonodo. For the tools themselves... Perhaps consider submitting them to bioperl biopython biojava and such. Or consider providing them as a tool in the Galaxy toolshed. Journals... Whe... Usually a lot of money for a simple thing. Get the tools copublished with the data it analyzed providing it by above mentioned tools...
