Samtools 1.3 mpileup result < >

I am using samtools(version 1.3) mpileup to get the mapping information of every position. But I cannot understand the < and > in the fourth column of the result. I would appreciate if someone can explain it here.

Here is what I get:

chr1    546478  A       1       >       E
chr1    1345545    a    4    ><<,    6EEE

Looks like they are "unseen alle". I just found some explanation online
