Obviously, Biostars have become the No.1 biology forum. I am thinking why it could be succeed so quickly.
- Speed is very high.
- NO advertisement, the page is very clear.
- It is easy to post questions and easy to answer questions, No validation passwd required.
- Huge great guy are active in the answering and questioning, such as Devon Ryan, Istvan Albert, Aaronquinlan, Rafael A Irizarry
- Search engines and index collection is powerful.
Really hope it could be keep like this all the time. Any more succeed factors?

Now how did I forget Pierre, I read his twitter daily. *stalker status*
That's why I added the link here. :-)
You already have this as an answer. But I honestly believe that the biggest contributing factor are the extremely knowledgeable people such as Devon, Istvan, Alex Reynolds, Ram, and others whom are constantly providing help.
As someone whom was strictly wet-lab up until a few months ago, I never would've made it very far without Biostars.
Another point - The site has a very clear and well-defined function: to answer any questions and queries relating to bioinformatics
It doesn't try to be all things to all people.
