Hello,

We are launching platform for all Bioinformatics Students, Scholars and Scientist to host, analyze their data with visualization. Please visit and signup with http://bioelm.com for early access with offers.

We also help you parse and upload your data into database.

Thanks

The problem is I can't figure out what this service does.

The site looks like this generic "cool" landing site, but information wise is lacking. I have no idea what it does. Click on "Features:" then it says "Push Notifications" ... of what?

Show something relevant, how does this site help someone?

Hi Istvan Albert, Thanks for your feedback we will update to make it more explanatory way. I'm one of the developer working for this platform. We are in beta mode and want to get feedback from the users.

You can perform the following using this platform, 1. Host your data (we will help you to host them). 2. Perform analysis (we will enable the tool for your need 3. Run analytics 4. Visualize your data 5. Build bioinformatics pipeline

Please share your contact info, I will share you the link, where you can login and explore the hosted data.

Thanks,

But you are still missing the main point that I raised.

What does the site do? We still do not know. "Perform analysis" is not a scientific term. What analysis are you referring too? Make sure that you can communicate at least one specific concept:

  • Can I run an aligner?
  • Which one?
  • How much data can you align?
  • How much is it going to cost me
  • How do you save me time from doing what I have already been doing

People will not care about your product unless you explain in 10 seconds the most important question: "How does this service help me" - and believe me when I am telling this, it is not the lack of push notifications that keeps us from finishing work in time.

Just the lack of push :)

Thanks Istvan, Can you share me the pain of point you are having, when you are analyzing your data or when you want to collaborate with your team members on your research or when you want to refer your work back?

I said this before.

You are approaching this from the point of view of a solution looking for a problem, instead stating what important problems are, which audience do you target, and what kind of solutions are you providing.

You seem to want to offload the task of finding and identifying problems to us (me and others), basically asking us to do the work you should have done. Your job is to present solutions then we tell you if we like those. Based on that feedback then you refine your software. Starting at the very beginning and asking people to do case research for you would be way too much work. Now I am sure many people here would help you out if you say hired them to compile a comprehensive report on this. That's how you should do it.

I am very sympathetic to anyone that wants to create better and more powerful software. There is plenty of room for progress. Just don't go about it the wrong way. From here it looks like you have a cool landing page before even having a product.

Hi Istvan, We already have business plan and road map. I am kind of looking out for the beta customers to use our tool, so that we will address the problems if we encounter any. We have hosted one database in our platform, and we are working on integrating the primer tool for that data. I can share you the access and credentials to our tool. Please share your email address, I will mail you the info.

Thanks.

  1. What's your business plan? How would you describe your product to scientific stakeholders, say, when you're applying for a grant?
  2. What would beta testers use your tool for - please be exact.
  3. So far, you've uploaded one file, and are asking us to test it. Really?

Ram, I can share my business plan in mail. Yes, We have uploaded one database but we want the users to share how they feel, So we will not build empire before validating them.

Guys, no one is looking to steal your business plan. If you do not have a narrative to offer to the public, how do you expect them to take you seriously? And please don't use words like "empire" - it's hard to not have some good natured fun when you hand gold like this to us.

Thanks Istvan, 1. Our end objective is to enable the users to build their BioInformatics Pipeline 2. Currently user can visualize their hosted data, with multiple graph options to explore and understand the data 3. We are going to enable the tools one by one based on user request 4. The push notification is one of the feature but we are brining more on mobile

In addition to a possible mobile app with notifications, what advantage do you have over a well established, flexible suite like Galaxy? Given how infrastructure as well as access is cheaper in the US/Europe compared to India, how do you plan on addressing increasing storage and compute costs in the long term?

What is the ONE unique fully functional aspect of your service that I cannot find anywhere else?

Ram, Mobile Push Notification, mainly focused on collaboration, when you are executing batch or long running jobs. As we are hosting on cloud (AWS/ Azure) we will handle the scalability issues both storage and server load. We are building a Bioinformatics pipeline. With current release, you can host your data and run your tools on line and share your analysis the way you want.

Let's look at it this way:

When I first started working on an HPC, I was introduced to the concept of system generated emails to notify me of job start, end and abort. I got push notifications because I got an email, and the email had my verbose job title on it along with an excerpt of the log/err-log.

When I want to work on an analysis on a cloud system (assuming the system is secure and the data is not sensitive), I'd pick one where the support from the public was the best - one with a large user base. That would be Galaxy. I'm not sure if Galaxy has email support, but I'm sure it would be extensible if it did not already have email support.

Galaxy also builds private-cloud deployable server apps if I need one. I'd have total control on this server. So tell me now, what does BioElm have that would make me want to use it over using Galaxy?

Within Galaxy, you can have an email sent once a "workflow" completes. That'd be analogous to a pipeline finishing and is probably useful enough. I don't think you get an email if an error occurs, which is a feature I'm sure someone could request.

BTW, I'm always grateful that I'm not the only one replying to posts like this with, "right, doesn't Galaxy already do that and have a big user/developer base?" :)

Thanks Ram... Critics and reviews are always welcome for business to grow....

I am bot able to post the reply since I'm newbie here...

  1. Users that build pipelines are either pro bioinformaticians or total new users that need vast support
  2. IGV does that - and visualization of big data will any day be better on a local tool than on a hosted web server
  3. That is a HUGE mistake. You're either a buffet or you're a la carte. You cannot start a buffet saying you'll cook on demand.
  4. I look forward to seeing more features that you think I need.

Thank you, Devon - I rarely use galaxy, because it doesn't feel as hands-on as the command line and also, my data is sensitive. Plus, I have a gigantic HPC at my disposal. Hence the low knowledge on email support in Galaxy :)

About the Don't Reinvent the Wheel drill, given I;m always super critical, I'm trying to stay a bit open minded. A bit of history indicates these people asked for our opinion on developing a mobile app, saw that our feedback was largely "meh", and went ahead and built a flashy Galaxy mod with push notifications. It's in our nature to ask "What's the big deal, I've got a working setup anyway" and say "This is too much Activation Energy to change status quo", but let's give these guys a shot to explain themselves.

If after some moderately generous time, they do not show us any new features, we do what we do anyway - stick to Galaxy. Right now, it looks like they have some content, but are making the mistake of a premature launch.

I can't blame you for not being overly familiar with Galaxy. I wasn't either until I had to run some instances of it :P

That, I think, will be how I learn it as well. Not as a user, but as a provider. A really fun way, IMO. Speaking of peeling away layers to learn the inner workings, I spent 3 hours learning django and now I can understand half a file in the biostar-central repository :/

Good job on the site - it looks beautiful. I'll add feedback as I explore it.

  1. Needs a bit of proof-reading. There are quite a few typos and grammar errors.
  2. Links that lead nowhere (like a lot of the links that point to http://bioelm.com/#) are a bit of a bummer :) Actually, scratch that - you seem to working on the content still, so this doesn't matter at the moment.
  3. Are you building a generic tool or are you specific to pineapples/plants?
  4. Your sign-up page is actually a "Contact Us" page. Huge difference :)

Thanks Ram for the wonderful feedback. Yes we are in very early stage and want to get the feedback from the users to improve. We are startup from Chennai, India. Please let me know your contact, I will share you the link for you to explore the hosted db.

Thanks.
