I'm currently finishing up my first year in a course based masters program in Bioinformatics and was wondering what would make me competitive in the job market following graduation (next year).
In terms of where I'd like to be I would like to work in industry, but just don't know how to get my foot through the door...
Help? :D
I will give you a few options that I came across when I was finishing my master in Bfx.
1) at the time I was doing my MS, the head of the course had continuous contacts with industries and startups and she was forwarding those info + contacts to the students. that helped those who wanted to get into a company. so, ask at your instructors, they'll be happy to help.
2) check websites like nature, cell or science. they have a job section and that includes posts from both industries and academia.
3) Linkdin and ResearchGate contain tons of job offers, lots of startups and seasoned companies are looking for bioinformaticians, so you can look up what field you want to work on and take it from there.
remember that "industry" is a VERY broad term and you should be ready to answer questions like "why do you want to work with us? why are you interested in biomarker discovery (or whatever)?"...so spend a lil time either building good answers and/or focusing on what you are interested in.
Boring question. Anyway - study and get good grades. Fine something that you like - or even love - and get good at it. What else could the answer be?
Try to do an internship in a company you like to work for. If they like your work, maybe you can stay there after you finished your masters.
I think TriS and b.nota nailed it! You even can start now and do your master thesis at a company of your interest. Companies love students, as they tend to be very bendable, if you know what I mean :) Good luck
I have also just completed masters just 7 months ago and I have never worked in company. But, as far as I know and I think companies need hard work technicians who are good at one thing as they cannot have you do everything. But they want you to do one thing and give the best output possible.
So my suggestion would be choose you favourite topic ( docking or seq analysis or programming or any other ) and be the best in that topic and i think it help your chances in competition.

Nice question, I'm also finishing my masters and I'm interested in advice too.
You will never be good at something you just do because somebody told you to do it (and you don't like). Figure out yourself guys what you enjoy and it will be easy to become good in this field - and if you are truly good, no matter what it is, you'll find a job.
