Job description
A postdoctoral research position is available in the group of Wolfgang Huber at EMBL Heidelberg to develop new ideas in the areas of statistical theory and computing with high-dimensional heterogeneous data in biomedical research. We employ novel technologies to create large-scale systematic datasets aimed at generating systems-levels understanding of emerging epigenetic drug targets – this includes automated phenotyping by imaging, high-throughput genetics (CRISPR), cutting-edge proteomics, RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq. The position will allow you to develop and apply computational and statistical methods needed to design, analyse and interpret such experiments.
There are many open scientific challenges in the field of high-dimensional heterogeneous data that this position gives you the opportunity to address, including structured sparsity inducing penalisation, inclusion of prior data, bioinformatic and statistical data integration, hierarchical modelling, efficient and performant data structures and algorithms, data-driven mechanism-oriented modelling, model selection and inference.
The position is part of a cooperation with Cellzome, a biotech company located on the campus of EMBL, and offers the opportunity of doing academic-track research in the context of novel drug target discovery and drug development in a science-driven pharma company. The jobholder will contribute to novel developments in the Bioconductor project, such as computational frameworks and new methodology for multi-omic data analysis.
Context
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Cambridge (UK), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany) and Rome (Italy).
Cellzome, a GSK company, applies its world-class proteomics technology to the discovery of safe and efficacious drugs. GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) is a science-led global healthcare company that researches and develops a broad range of innovative medicines and brands.
Bioconductor is an open source, open development software project to collaboratively develop tools for the analysis and comprehension of high-throughput genomic data.
Qualifications and Experience
The position requires outstanding quantitative and analytical skills. We are looking for a candidate with PhD-level education in mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science or a related field, who wants to make an impact in biomedical research. Curiosity to work in interdisciplinary projects and continuously expand your horizon is expected. Expertise in scientific computing is required, including low-level (e.g. C) and high-level (e.g. R) languages. Experience in large-scale data analysis will be useful. The position requires the ability to independently take responsibility over your project, teamwork and communication skills, reliability, attention to detail and effective time management.
