PhD programs in bioinformatics and genomics

Hello everyone,

I am writing to ask your advice.

I am looking for a list of Ph.D. programs in bioinformatics and genomics - ideally in the US. I am asking for a friend who is applying now but can start in just a few months - no need to wait until fall.

What programs would you recommend? And of course please recommend your own program if you are involved in education and training of graduate students.

I for one would be looking for PhD positions in europe (and other places with 3-4 year programs). I know that many positions can be found on websites like findaphd.com, naturejobs, biostars, seqanswers, academictransfer (please add what I am missing?) but there have to be many more. Of course there are also personal connections, twitter links etc. Unfortunately, I know that many bioinformatics groups that are part of larger biocentres are only (or primarily) recruiting through their general life science phd programs (and they know that this is prolematic as they are therfore barely visible). I know that job seeking is not always easy but sometimes a little help would be nice (even if you then have to look through hundreds of applicants ;)

So, who is looking for a very good PhD student within europe, beginning Q1 next year? I am primarily looking for projects regulation and gene expression (like the Andersonlab project below) but always interested in interesting topics.

One way of answering this question (although, arguably not the best way) is to look at the author affiliations of papers in bioinformatics journals. I wrote a quick script to tally first author affiliations from several journals where bioinformatics-related articles are often published:

Briefings in bioinformatics, Bioinformatics, PLOS Computational Biology, Nucleic Acids Research, BMC Bioinformatics

And here are the top 20 universities with the most publications in these journals in the last 5 years:

That does not answer my question. Did you do the analysis? Did you do the analysis in R or Python? Can you make that code available?

The academic year has already started in the UK, and this is when most PhD students start. However there are continually positions offered throughout the year.

I would personally recommend Edinburgh, however Imperial, York and Cambridge are excellent. The best site to check in the UK is www.jobs.ac.uk, I found mine through but also ensure you check university recruitment sites

In the UK the funding bodies are MRC, BBSRC EPSRC, Welcome trust, and Cancer Research UK. If you want to work with a specific professor/University and they don't have a role open, they will typically take you if you can fund/source funding yourself.
