How can I use Samtools to map coverage distribution?

I want to use Samtools to map copverage distribution and retrieve the regions with the highest coverage and view it in IGV as a track. I've found the samtools stats -c that outputs coverage statistics. Is there another way? Also, is bedtools an option?
