Introduction

Entrance level bioinformatic position available for Biologists/Scientists/Data Analysts with relevant experience and interested in computational biology and cancer genomics.

Overview

Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute brings together world renowned clinicians, innovative researchers and dedicated professionals, allies in the common mission of conquering cancer, HIV/AIDS and related diseases. Combining extremely talented people with the best technologies in a genuinely positive environment, we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all ages; we conduct research that advances treatment; we educate tomorrow's physician/researchers; we reach out to underserved members of our community; and we work with amazing partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.

Master’s level research position in computational biology focused on cancer genomics is available at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School for a highly motivated, hard-working, individual. The position will be jointly co-mentored by Dr Rani George (Pediatric Oncology) and Dr Kwok-Kin Wong (Medical Oncology).

The successful candidate will apply computational solutions for integrative analysis of gene expression, RNAseq, and ChIPseq data to gain mechanistic insights into the effect of drug treatment in altering the transcription factor activities, epigenetic patterns, and pathway activities in cancer cells. Current projects include inference of gene regulatory networks, genome-wide chromatin state characterization, and genome-wide changes in gene transcription. He/she should be able to work simultaneously on multiple projects, involving a diverse and interdisciplinary team of scientists across laboratories. The candidate will work closely with a Ph D level computational biologist in the two labs.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets complex biological information. Performs tasks to reduce and consolidate output from software. Prepares data for utilization by other scientists.
  • Monitors new data from public databases, finds and loads missed data, cleans loaded data to satisfy quality control criteria.
  • Must be able to query various sources for the information needed; i.e., the Web, publications and internal DFCI resources.
  • Directs and guides DNA, RNA and protein sequence database searches and the computational analysis of resulting data.
  • Implements end-users needs in database searching and integration.
  • Maintains the computational infrastructure and controls the flow of samples and information for large-scale studies.
  • Recognizes and reports problems with the data management process and fixes the problems whenever possible.

Qualifications

The successful applicant(s) should hold a a Master’s (or in rare exceptions a B.S) degree or equivalent qualification in computational biology, (bio)statistics, computer science, or a similar field and have experience in the analysis of high throughput data.

Strong programming (in Python, R, Matlab, or C/C++) and communication skills are required. Previous experience in analysis, interpretation, and integration of RNAseq and ChIPseq data is also required. Previous knowledge in cancer biology is desired but not required.

Additional advantage: Lead author in at least one publication in major peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Additional Information:

Interested applicants please apply online and also send atleast two letters of recommendation to Dr. Rani George (rani_george@dfci.harvard.edu) and Dr Kwok-Kin Wong (kwong1@partners.org).
