I happen to know Jaap Heringa, one of the two reviewers, he is an excellent bioinformatician.

The book is excellent. It is from scratch to intermediate level. Worth buying and reading.
While I do not own the book and did not read it from cover to cover I did parse it for few hours in the library in 2008. At that time this was probably the best book for teaching students, and it used as such, i.e. here:
