Hello everyone,

I developed a web app that displays the current available Bioinformatics PhD programs in the United States. I developed this app to assist me with my graduate school search, and I hope it will help other prospective grad students as well. You can find the app at bioinfophd.com.

I compiled the list of PhD programs myself, as I couldn't find a good list online. Feel free to email me at ahmedalaa@windowslive.com with any questions. I plan to regularly update the app to keep the information up-to-date. (Last update: September 2018)

Finally, feel free to comment below or email me if there's a PhD program you know of that's not on the app, and I'll happily add it. I tried to make the list as comprehensive as possible, but I might have missed some schools! I'll also welcome any suggestions to improve the app.

The spreadsheet which contains the list of PhD programs can also be found on GitHub.

You might want to consider universities (such as University of Chicago) that offer bioinformatics specializations within the PhD of another discipline (such as computer science). A few that come to mind that aren't on this list would be Indiana University-Bloomington, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Northwestern.

Also what is your source for the rankings? I'd be interested in seeing the full list.

I don't think there is a special ranking that is generally applicable. Based on the wording of the original post this is just a list that OP came up with to aid his own grad school search.

I meant, where is the US News Ranking? It's used as the final column in the table.

Here. The ranking is a general one.

Thank you for your suggestion Hussain. I have indeed tried to include the PhD programs with bioinformatics specializations within them, such as University of Washington and the University of Maryland. I have found those trickier to find, and I clearly have missed some based on your comment. Thank you for pointing out some of the programs that I missed, I will add them to the list.

The ranking comes from the US News annual university rankings, which the user genomax has been kind enough to link to above. It is a general ranking and not specific to the bioinformatics programs, and to be honest I do not believe it is reflective at all of the relative quality of these bioinformatics programs. I have included it just to provide a reference for the overall level of the university, although I would encourage prospective students to visit the program websites instead to get a good sense of each program's quality.
