Hello Biostars!

Today I'm little bit more into biology. I was reading about the characteristics of gene like the gene contains 5' end; promoter; exon 1 containg TSS & start codon; intron ; exon 2, intron & might be few more intron-exon pairs; last exon containing stop codon & TTS; 3' end.

i. I was wondering if we can identify where exactly gene starts ?
ii .Any special sequence is there for the start of gene?
iii. Average gene length ?
iv. The 'first' start codon after promoter always represent TSS and first stop codon encountered is TTS for a DNA sequence?

Please help me out.. Thank you in advance.

The cis-element annotation system (CEAS) software goes into this in some detail: http://liulab.dfci.harvard.edu/CEAS/
