I want to install a computer to analyze the data of nova genome sequencing generated by Roche 454 and illumina. What are the necessary performances in this computer (RAM, HHD, ROM ...) ?

This question comes up periodically here and on SeqAnswers. There is no one solution fits all answer for this. First consideration is the budget you have access to. Second is the amount of data you expect to generate/analyze per month/year.

  • If you intend to do de novo assembly you should maximize the amount of RAM you can afford.
  • Don't buy the top of line CPU's. Going down the rung a step or two will add time to the analyses but will save significant money (that can be put towards more RAM)
  • Get a SSD drive for OS with spinning disks for more general storage is sufficient for small labs
  • A fancy GPU is not needed/very useful unless you intend to mine crypto-currency on side
  • You are best off using some variant of UNIX since most of the free software is going to be of that variety

If you have more specific questions then post some follow-up.
