What does "." mean in transcript ID?

Hi, everyone.

I have transcript IDs as below, what does . mean? Are these two ID are same?

ENST00000318325.6
ENST00000318325.2

transcript ncbi ensembl • 2.9k views

Hello,

the number after the . is the version of the transcript.

See here.

When talking/writing about transcript one should always add the information about the version and the reference genome.

~~In some cases it might also point to isoforms of a specific gene. But that's not gonna be the case here I think~~

EDIT: after consulting people from Ensembl it turns out my comment above is not holding true for the emsembl IDs, so can safely be ignored in this specific case!
