question about fast5 file and fastq file size

I have a set of fast5 files about 1.7 GB, after basecalling by using Albacore the files were transfermed to fastq files and the size was reduced to about 38 MB. I am new to Nanopore MinION, could someone help me to explain how the size was reduced? Thank you.
