Python Data Visualization Course

Berlin, 10-14 December 2018

Last 3 spots left

Course Description

This course provides a stronger foundation in data visualization in Python. The course provides a broader coverage of the Pandas and Seaborn (a package for statistical graphics) and an overview of Matplotlib library . Topics covered include customizing graphics, plotting two-dimensional arrays (e.g., pseudocolor plots, contour plots, images, etc.) and statistical graphics (e.g., visualizing distributions & regressions).

Course promotions seem a bit unbalanced lately. Actually, I can only see these from carlopecoraro2. Like two or three times per day. All others are deleted pretty fast.

Just my two cents here. I hope you don't mind.

The current policy is that everyone is free to promote courses, if they're "real" (so no scam) and ontopic (bioinformatics or related).

My personal preference would be for things like this ("3 spots left") to be a boost on the original advertising post, rather than a new post (you can just reply to an existing post to boost it).

Agreed - that would make most sense.

My last x promotions were directly deleted from the first page within minutes without any feedback/communication about the erasure. Me and my co-workers stopped actively taking part in biostars and switched to seqanswers, since for us, as a company, there should be a balance between giving and taking. I don't want to start any discussion about this here, but since JohnBlue81 opened this discussion, I just wanted to mention this.

@JohnBlue81: Thanks for starting this discussion, but as I already told you, we don't care too much about leaving biostars.

David, your claim does not appear to be correct at all - can you please elaborate? You have made posts in the past about courses/workshops that have not been deleted, like these:

I see no evidence of where an entire post that you made about a workshop was deleted. On face value, your claim appears entirely un-substantiated. I do see evidence of where 2 comments to one of your own initial posts were deleted. These comments (by you) were made seemingly to attract more attendees to the workshop in question. After the workshop, such posts are no longer required.

You are free to post about your workshops. Advancing learning in bioinformatics is important.

Your posts have not been deleted.

The site moves fast, lots of content gets generated and your posts will get displaced from the front page. Perhaps it is that event that you feel like "deletion" of posts. Rest assured that people searching for courses will find your posts as Google ranks the site highly.

Bumping posts for the sole reason of them appearing on the front page is not an accepted use of the site.

I regret that you haven't communicated about this earlier - because deleting those is not our policy if those promotions are ontopic. I'll raise this issue on our moderator slack group. We don't want to scare any contributors away like this - so I care.

@Kevin Sorry for being not so clear. I wrote that the posts have been 'deleted from the first page within minutes' and not that they were entirely deleted. Somebody obviously changed the date, so that they disappeared. And it was for sure not due to the fact that the sites moves fast, since we double-checked that for the last posts. Within minutes they disappeared and popped up like they were written weeks ago.

@Istvan: We had the discussion about aggressively bumping posts some month/years ago and I completely agreed with you. That's why we stopped bumping the promotions. Actually I thought you guys deleted the posts, because you were still annoyed by them. Now it looks like that was a false assumption. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

The point is, I don't want to start this discussion. I think now it is communicated and that's it. At least for me. I was and I am a big fan of biostars. Every single person who joined one of our courses can tell you that. We promote the forum in our courses, since it is a big help for beginners and professionals. I don't want to blackguard biostars, since I love it. I just wanted to openly communicate the issue, since it came up.
