What database do you use to access various details / statistics on common human diseases for various population ?

I know about CDC websites (for example see the description on abdominal aortic aneurysm here) that provides various statistics with respect to US, but not sure if such data is available for other countries or populations.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I would definitely include DBPedia, here an example SPARQL query for diseases. Besides SIDER might give some additional info - SIDER contains information on marketed medicines and their recorded adverse drug reactions. The information is extracted from public documents and package inserts. The available information include side effect frequency, drug and side effect classifications as well as links to further information, for example drug–target relations.

P.S.: What are you aiming at? Let me know how it goes and what visualization you come up with ;-)

Thanks Joerg. I have tried to see the SPARQL link you provided - it's keep loading for a while, but am yet to see the loaded page. Thanks for the tips on SIDER, that's a very useful resource.

Sometimes you need to see the question on successive days to arrive at an answer...

Try the CIA World Factbook. For Angola, e.g., there is:

  • HIV/AIDS - adult prevalence rate: 2% (2009 est.)
  • HIV/AIDS - people living with HIV/AIDS: 200,000 (2009 est.)
  • HIV/AIDS - deaths: 11,000 (2009 est.)
  • Major infectious diseases: degree of risk: very high:

food or waterborne diseases: bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A, typhoid fever

vectorborne diseases: malaria, African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness)

water contact disease: schistosomiasis (2009)

I do not see any rates of incidence for the major infectious diseases, but you do have that for HIV/AIDS. I did not see any historical data nor did I check other countries.

Added on 5 Jul 2011:

An article in the 3 Jul 2011 New York Times Business section describes how the World Bank has now made available a trove of their data. Included here are statistics relating to health. A lot seems similar to the CIA Fact Book (probably no surprise!), but maybe some things are different. See http://data.worldbank.org/topic/health.

Thanks Larry. This is interesting, but am mostly interested in vascular diseases and would like to know about the frequency, comorbidity, mortality with respect to various populations / countries.

Then Angola is a bad example with respect to those diseases. Check Canada. I do think though, the co-morbidity and like issues mean that you'd need to find stats from country-specific health centers, such as the CDC in the USA. There may be something for Europe as a group a countries, but pan-African or pan-Asian stats may be difficult to come by.

Have you looked at the British study that is supposed to be the longest running birth co-hort one? There were some big articles about it's recent anniversary: http://www.nshd.mrc.ac.uk/

http://www.mrc-hnr.cam.ac.uk/media/news/hnr-is-proud-to-be-involved-in-nshd-and-celebrates-its-65th-anniversary.html

There was a really nice article about it here: http://www.nature.com/news/2011/110302/full/471020a.html

I think you have to register, but you might find useful stuff.

Please use the "Ask Question" button at the top, and please provide some more details what you want to know about. Your current question is rather vague.
