A position for a doctoral candidate is available in Leila Taher’s new lab at the Institute for Biomedical Informatics at Graz University of Technology (Austria). The lab develops and applies regulatory genomics and systems biology approaches to analyze large genomic datasets. Our long-term goal is to gain novel insights into the mechanisms and evolution of differential gene expression.

Required academic qualification:

Master’s level degree in Bioinformatics, Informatics in the Natural Sciences, Applied Computer Sciences, Bioengineering or equivalent.

The successful candidate should also:

  • Possess good programming skills (e.g., Perl, Python, R; see "Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics" by James D. Tisdall and "Developing Bioinformatics Computer Skills" by Cynthia Gibas and Per Jambeck).
  • Have a proven knowledge of Molecular Biology at a level of Benjamin Lewin’s "Genes XII".
  • Be proficient in both written and oral English.
  • Be creative, independent and self-motivated.
  • Have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and the ability to work in a team.

Experience with Machine Learning applications and/or sequencing technologies (in particular, Oxford Nanopore Technologies) would be of advantage.

Tasks:

The spatial organization of the genome is essential for the precise control of gene expression. Misregulation of gene expression can cause a broad range of diseases, including cancer. The successful candidate will develop machine learning and apply advanced statistical approaches to analyze HiC data and model the three-dimensional structure of the genome, in particular, in the context of development and disease. The data involved in these analyses will be obtained from public data repositories (e.g., ENCODE) or generated by some of our experimental collaborators. The position is intended to give promising candidates the opportunity to pursue advanced research in functional genomics leading to a doctoral degree in Natural (Dr. rer. nat.) or Technical (Dr. Techn.) Sciences. Doctoral candidates are expected to explore and address open research questions in the field of Bioinformatics, contribute to existing projects in the Institute for Biomedical Informatics, present their work at conferences, write scientific articles describing their findings, support teaching, undertake duties in academic self-administration, and actively participate in the activities of the group.

What we offer:

The position is for a fixed term of 4 years and will be paid according to category B1 of the collective agreement for employees of Austrian universities. This currently results in a monthly gross salary in the amount of € 2.864,50 (14 x per year), which may increase on the basis of previous experience.

Application deadline:

20 December 2019

How to Apply:

Send an e-mail to applications.csbme@tugraz.at including and funcgenfau@gmail.com a cover letter with a short explanation for how this position fits into your interests and career aspirations, your CV, copies of your transcripts and certificates, and contact information of two references. Please indicate the position identification number "7200/19/032" in the subject of your e-mail.
