Hi, I am a Doctoral Student in Bioinformatics in Covenant University, Nigeria. I am seeking opportunities for internships in US or Europe. The duration is for 3 months during the summer break. This is to gain exposure to skills and world class experience. I know US requires J1 intern Visa and can be inconvenient for the target Organisations sometimes. I wanted to know what the further possibilities might be towards this end. Any Help will be appreciated.
I'm not sure how this usually works, but could you say something about need of funding or if funding is available for your internship?
An internship is paid although there maybe additional funding.
It's a bit unusual to look for internships as a PhD student, most internship requests I see are at the masters level. I would suggest applying directly to labs you're interested in just like for a job and figuring it out from there. However, some consider that three months is too short to justify the effort required in training someone, i.e. the trainee leaves just when they start becoming operational. On the other hand, as a PhD student, you may be able to frame this as a collaboration in the context of your PhD project(s).
And in that context, I would call this a research stay, rather than an internship.
In one of the Spanish Sci centers internship of half a year (keeping the salary) is included into phd contract, given that you find the lab yourself...Around half of students use this opportunity. It must be totally different in US, country of capitalism.
In regard to the J1, you need a monthly income of at least $2,000 or something. Therefore, If you can demonstrate that you have that amount of money I don not see why should be inconvenient for the organization. Also, keep in mind that you have to pay for the quarter fee and for a medical insurance.
