Comprising diverse researchers from a variety of disciplines across academic divisions, the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute leads UC Santa Cruz's efforts to unlock the world's genomic data and accelerate breakthroughs in health and evolutionary biology. Our platforms, technologies, and scientists unite global communities to create and deploy data-driven, life-saving treatments and innovative environmental and conservation efforts, while addressing the most fundamental societal and policy questions.
The Computational Genomics Platform (CGP) team uses big data technologies to facilitate genomic research for global health issues such as breast cancer and other genetic risk factors. The team collaborates with many universities and institutes around the world. Examples of projects include supporting a global team to create the Human Cell Atlas, a compendium that maps gene activity in each cell in the human body, the NHLBI Data STAGE and NHGRI AnVIL projects, which develop technologies to share and combine controlled access genomic data across different institutes, and Dockstore, a platform for scientists to share analytical workflows and tools with the wider biomedical research community.
Under direction from the director of the Computation Genomics Platform, the program manager leads a team of technical professionals to develop and maintain bioinformatics tools. The incumbent collaborates with principal investigators, program managers, and administrative staff to achieve objectives. They provide direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance, administer policies that affect subordinate staff, recommend changes to department policies and practices when necessary, identify risks and respond accordingly, set priorities for their team, and analyze and adjust workflow for optimal performance.

Qualifications / Competencies:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training with an emphasis in computer science, data processing, computer information systems, or in a related field.
- Experience leading a technical staff of IT and / or scientific personnel, including projects performed by multiple developers; experience with human resources policies and procedures relating to management responsibilities.
- Experience with and knowledge of applications programming, web development, data security, operating systems, relational databases, and data structures in an open source environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles of personnel management and conflict resolution.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience developing, deploying and managing web portals.
- Project management experience in a biomedical, research, or software development organization.
- Demonstrated quantitative and analytical abilities.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others at various levels in the organization, including senior project leadership.
