Term: 4 Years Fully Funded PhD Studentship
A four years fully-funded PhD studentship is available starting as soon as possible in the computational chemistry and drug discovery lab of Dr. Khaled Barakat at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Alberta, Canada. Successful applicants will employ state-of-the-art computational techniques and high-performance computing facilities accessible to the lab to work on the structural biology of membrane proteins.
Applicants should have a good undergraduate record in a research-rich environment. They should also have strong communication skills, and an ability to collaborate effectively.
The following qualifications are essential:
- M.Sc. degree (or equivalent eg: first-class honor) in chemistry, physics, or a related discipline (completed or near completion) as well as outstanding B.Sc. graduates (with a 3.5/4.0 or higher GPA).
- Strong aptitudes and in-depth passion in physical chemistry and in mathematics.
- Interest in biochemistry, physiology, computer simulations. Familiarity with UNIX/Linux operating systems and python scripting.
- At least one first-author publication in a closely related field.
- Familiarity with computational structural biology/bioinformatics techniques, such as homology modeling, classical MD simulation, docking, etc.
- Experience with at least one of the software packages for atomistic biological simulations, such as AMBER, NAMD, GROMACS is recommended.
- A proof of English language proficiency.
The initial appointment will be for four years; this can be increased up to 5 years depending on the availability of funding.
