Meaning Of Hg And Na Prefix For 1000 Genomes Project Sample Notation

These are a couple of randomly selected 1000 Genomes Project sample data: NA19147 and HG00185.

What do the NA and HG prefixes mean? Also, how is the 5-digit number determined?

I apologize if these are common questions. I've been searching online with little success. Thank you!

Those are sample numbers. The HG probably stands for "Human Genome". Not sure what the "NA" means. Complete genomics id's their public control samples that way too. Maybe "Normal Adult"? But they're sample numbers. They're determined by the order of accession.

Those identifiers are called Coriell Sample ID from the Coriell Institute.

You can go to their website and search the ID for more information on the individual:
