Hello all, I was wondering as to how to assign function to newly discovered protein. Can anybody tell me? Thank you

Can you define what you mean with "newly discovered protein" ? is this like "annotated in a new genome" or rather "new as in never been described/encountered before " ?

It is new for that particular organism as it not present in the database

While the exact protein may not be present ( a close relative is bound to be there) it is likely going to have domains that are already known. You can putatively "assign" a function by doing comparative sequence/domain analyses but only experimental proof can confirm that prediction. Bioinformatics only gets you so far.

Start with domain/motif database searches (InterPro, PFAM). More complicated analyses would involve structure prediction/searching.
