What does the * mean?
perhaps the star shows the penality when the letter codes do not match (and are not any of the valid aminoacids), perhaps a gap, just guess, but nice catch I've never noticed that line
that's what I thought too, but maybe better to return some error message to the user in case that does happen (alongside any alignments)
