Food for thought: what would people think about a "Jobs" section on the site? I find it hard to reach potential research computing candidates through traditional job sites. Biostars seems like a great opportunity for labs and industry employers to post job opportunities. Thoughts?

I think its a good idea, the bioinformatics jobs linkedin group doesn't appear to have much of value in it. And I'd like the idea of seeing reputation on biostar of prospective bosses/applicants.

This might become a bit of a reputation race, there ;-)

If the quality of questions and answers is maintained, why not. But the main aim of Biostars.org should remain Q&A.

I am hoping that the reputation will be measured by evaluating at the contributions that the person has made rather than just the score.

There are a few interesting groups in LinkedIn. I like Bioinformatics Geeks, for one ( http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Bioinformatics-geeks-65325/about )

Pros: Nice opportunity for users and businesses to interface.

Cons: Will draw in odd trafic. Specifically people who aren't biostar members. Also I image it would difficult to moderate. How would you validate that a job posting is real?

I think it is worth a try.

I disagree. I know it has already been created and agree that LinkedIn is not good for those doing Bioinformatics. Still other job search sites like Indeed.com have tons of postings for those doing bioinformatics. The only benefit I see is in being able to evaluate the skill level of those being hired by seeing the questions they've asked and solutions they've offered.Here's a search for "bioinformatics" on Indeed with some 1,300+ jobs listed: http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=bioinformatics&l=

There are a few things to consider about opening a section for job postings

  • Some countries have a very strict policy for advertising jobs. In Italy, for example, you would need to pay a license. I don't know how does it works for the USA.
  • Posting job offers is sensitive because it involves sending personal data to unknown people. In principle, somebody could create a fake job offer, just to collect private email addresses and data. We can avoid this kind of problems
  • We should determine some rules for job postings to assure transparency. Each job poster should at least have to indicate his name, his connection with the company, the city where the job is based, and the salary.

That is a good idea. Although it is more work for the developers but I think more people will get involve at Biostar. Not only the applicants who would be searching for jobs but also supervisors, experienced researchers posting the jobs are going to explore the website and ultimately some of them would get involve in Q&A which is definitely going to benefit beginner's like me.

Great idea. I'm finishing my master in december and I want to do a PHD, but I don't know where to look. It could be very helpful.

What would be helpful about biostar specifically (for you) over other options like findaphd.com or linkedin? Just wondering.

well, at Biostar you can get a glimpse of a candidates abilities if they are an active user here - it is true that the mere listing of a job is not all that different.
