Hi,

I am looking at the following BIB page: https://academic.oup.com/bib/search-results?q=Method+Review&allJournals=1&f_ArticleTypeDisplayName=Research+Article&f_TocHeadingTitle=Method+Review&fl_SiteID=5143&page=1&sort=Date+%e2%80%93+Newest+First

On the left panel of this page is a heading called Section under which different sections are listed such as "Method Review", "Articles" etc. However, when I go to the submission website, I cannot find the submission type for "Articles" and "Papers". I only found the following ones: "Method Review", "Database Review", "Book Review", "Letter to Editor", "Software/Website review", "Opinion Article", "Case study", and "Problem Solving Protocol".

So I am wondering under which type the manuscripts categorized as "Articles" were submitted to. Articles seem to contain original research regarding new bioinformatics methodology (e.g., https://academic.oup.com/bib/advance-article/doi/10.1093/bib/bbaa354/6046058?searchresult=1) , while Method Review seems to be of a review nature.

Kindly advise.

Thanks!

I cannot answer your question, but I wondered, are you asking because you consider submitting there ? If so, I would suggest sending the editor a presubmission inquiry (incuding an abstract of your manuscript). The editor should be able to quickly tell you under what category your article will fit best (or if it is completely out of the journal scope).

Yes, I was trying to submit. I e-mailed them but didn't send them an abstract. May be pre-submission inquiry is faster.

Thanks!

Not sure what advice you are seeking. Their instructions about types of manuscripts seem very clear to me. There is no submission type for Articles or Papers, and they have a clear statement to that effect: Please note that Briefings in Bioinformatics is a review journal and does not publish articles that are pure original research. If you manuscript doesn't fit their article types, this journal may not be the best venue for it.

Thanks for pointing out that description. That makes it more definite.

After going through the article types, I had concluded that they accept primarily review articles. However, I came across manuscripts that are not reviews and propose novel methods. For example, this one is tagged "Articles" (not Method Review, or Problem Solving Protocol) https://academic.oup.com/bib/advance-article/doi/10.1093/bib/bbaa354/6046058?searchresult=1), and based on the abstract seems to be proposing a new algorithm. The snippet is below:

"In this paper, based on a convolutional neural network and a deep forest algorithm, multi-grained cascade forest (GcForest), we propose a novel deep fusion learning framework, GcForest fusion method (GCFM), to classify alignments of ncRNA sequences for accurate clustering of ncRNAs. GCFM integrates a multi-view structure feature representation including sequence-structure alignment encoding, structure image representation and shape alignment encoding of structural subunits, enabling us to capture the potential specificity between ncRNAs."
