Wikimedia Germany e.V. has decided to fund development of JChemPaint for Wikipedia. The project description is available (in German) at http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Community-Projektbudget/Strukturformelzeichenprogramm.
The major goals are:
- install JChemPaint on http://toolserver.org/ or https://labsconsole.wikimedia.org
- create a helper that eases the upload on http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload/Chemistry
- attach metadata like Chemical Markup Language to allow editing the image with JChemPaint again
- make the SVG export of JChemPaint compatible with librsvg which MediaWiki uses as a renderer
- ensure good usability for faster drawing and correct formulas
- try to implement wishes from the Wikipedia chemists community who are the target group
As Wikimedia Germany is a non-profit entity with limited resources payment will be around 400 € / month over 13 months aiming at student assistants.
