Feature request: would it be a good idea to limit the total number of upvotes to a certain amount over a 24 hour period?

Only reason I can think of is to prevent people from encouraging friends and family to bump up their score. Hardly likely to be an issue at this site :)

Another reason that might come to mind is that because there will be less total points, the value of 1 point will be higher. However, the value of 1 point already is relative to that total number of points. Only the absolute numbers will shift a bit but nothing will change. I say, keep it the way it is.

BTW, I wonder why the amount of points of each user is multiplied by 10? Is this a but or will it be that way? If it stays you cannot say +1 any more, then its +10

about the family part that @Neilfws discuss it will not be that effective as they will not follow you in each post and after that your answer will be recognized as fake to the site fellows"will not be recognized as trustable answers". also if the answer is not suitable or off the topic it may be down rated and your friends can not do any thing with that :)

Would you want to prevent people (who cares about points) asking question on friday night or on week-end, or holidays? More seriously, what the problem with the current rules, you should at least develop. I agree with Neil BTW.

There's currently a limit to 10 upvotes per user every six hours (see here). Are you thinking something more stringent is needed or is there a reason you're asking?

Are you sure the limit is working? I checked just now and managed to upvote 60 Q&As in the last 5 minutes.

that used to be a limit but I turned it off since I ran into it a few times if I was away for a while

to expand on this, the infrastructure is there to apply the limit it was just not clear if this is beneficial at all or not - I will soon add the feature that allows one to see where their last N votes are coming in from, that might be the best way to police it

I worry that knowing whom is voting could cause snowballing. For example if a highly ranked biostar member upvotes then more people will up-vote. Maybe only editors/admins should be allowed to track up-votes? I think the current voting system works well.

I do agree that seeing every single vote could bias the process itself. I am just trying to add a small, fun mini-diversion kind of feature where you can see the last ten people that voted for someone, or the last posts that are getting votes lately. Mostly fun but also useful in that some type of suspect behavior (all votes coming from the same person) would be immediately apparent

I like the idea of seeing a small random sampling of what people are voting on at the moment. Its maybe a way to identify threads which are trending? And, it could encourage/remind people to vote on questions/answers that they like. From my perspective, the main problem with voting on biostars is that there aren't enough of us doing it. :-)
