Is there a way in Mega to convert a tree from a rooted to unrooted tree? I googled around and I couldn't find anything and the help file is decidedly unhelpful.

This is my opinion, but MEGA is an absolutely horrible program. No documentation to be heard of. I've had so many problems and so many bugs I swore I would never use it again. Is there a reason you need to use MEGA? I'm not aware of anything MEGA can do that you can't do easier and better in other programs.

I agree, I don't like Mega one bit. However, as the only bioinfo guy in a lab of 30 wet lab biologists I have to pick my battles. So when someone asks "how do I unroot this tree I made in Mega?" I can't always say "don't use that program, learn to use $commandlineprogram".

but they gave you example data which will learn you by example and also a manual already exist also give you lot of feature in one GUI software so for a beginner it is helpful.

If the student is able to convert their tree out of MEGA (is MEGA even accepted for publications now? Recent experience says "No".) into a Newick file format they should be able to use any number of tree editors (as Alice has stated already).

For a tree editor, I would recommend using Figtree. It's my favorite. I think the student will find it easy to use, flexible on many platforms (not unless they have issues with Java) and you can go from rooted to unrooted tree in seconds.

I don't use MEGA for playing with trees, so recommend you to convert tree to another format (newick, if i'm right) and change it in normal tree editor.

That was my knee jerk response but this student needs to use Mega for 'reasons'
