I am working in plant sciences and therefore would like to ask what does Het means in assembly of drosophila? Here: ftp://ftp.flybase.net/releases/current/dmel_r5.49/dna/

I know what mean things like Random, U or M, but not this. Is there any place where I could learn all abbreviations used in assemblies? Thank you very much.

(I would say that Het means actually heterochromatin, but why and how would there be such a division?)

Het does indeed refer to the heterochromatic regions, bur refers to scaffolds that are not linked to the main chromosome arms but which have been mapped by cytological criteria. See this paper by Hoskins et al for more information: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/316/5831/1625.full
