I was searching for an up-to-date list of centers that are conducting large scale next-gen sequencing and associated bioinformatics. Wikipedia has a list of genetics research organizations but it seems out of date and is not bioinformatics or genomics focused. Yes, but there is terra incognita in that map. For example, it shows that Africa has the same number of sequencers as Russia.

James Hadfield started a google map of institutes with modern sequencers that is very useful (but it looks like it hasn't been updated in a couple of years). It would be interesting to see how these statistics change over time because sequencing prices and technology have both changed a lot in the last two years. I can imagine one could learn a lot about how data is being generated and how/where different technologies are being utilized by summarizing this information.

EDIT: I was composing a response at the same time as Pierre and it looks like the link in his response is a more up-to-date google map, so disregard this link. Interestingly, it was conceived by the same person.

On the IMG web site (http://img.jgi.doe.gov/) they list the sequencing center involved in various genome projects. You could download the list and start with that - maybe limit it to ones with multiple projects.

In the list you have, you're missing Oak Ridge and Los Alamos national labs and J. Craig Venter.

Here are some you missed from Asia and Australia. Although for a couple of these I can't be sure if they are primarily academic as your current list seems to be. Maybe the criteria should be further described to indicate this will be a list of non-industry centers of genomic sequencing activity?
