Maybe this deal will make the Solid and Ion-torrent platform from Life Tech more competitive again against Illumina. Or maybe it will go the same way as with 454...
Interesting also to see a single company now manufacturing mass spetrometers (for proteomics) and sequencers (for genomics).
(Reuters) - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc on Monday agreed to buy Life Technologies Corp for $13.6 billion in a deal that would make it one of the top companies in the hot field of genetic testing. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/15/us-lifetechnologies-thermofisher-idUSBRE93D0A620130415
I just saw the news, $13.6 B is a little less than I expected~
I have a friend who works at Thermo/Fisher and he says the rumors are already flying around that they plan to phase out Soild and IonTorrent over the next year. Just speculation now, but interesting stuff...
SOLiD should be washed out, but why Ion torrent? They need at least one NGS sequencing platform, I think.
I haven't heard a lot of support for the Ion Torrent platform, so I'm not surprised there either. Rumor is there are new LIFE platforms on the horizon to replace these.
