Personal advertising is here, free of charge for users with sufficient reputation.
Showcase your own accomplishments and put them in front of hundreds of thousands of people.
Last year Biostar was visited by over half a million unique individuals and growth indicators suggest that this year we will pass the one million mark.
For more information see the Ad Help Page.
The 1000 required reputation was selected using a particular criteria looking at the distribution of reputation among users or it's just random?
we tried to find a score level that initially covers a sufficient number of users but also a number that can be reached in what we think is a reasonable amount of time for someone that is active on the site.
We do also need to get users to vote a little more, perhaps this will also spur that.
Well, it may sound like a complain (It's not, trust me) but the score you get may differ a lot depending on your work field. So if you're not in the "hot field" It's much harder. I work on evolutionary genomics and I don't think It's a majority here.
It is a fair observation and we need to discuss such details here. One good way to get a lot of votes is writing one ore more tutorials on a given subject. Simple straightforward tutorials get a lot of votes. We could perhaps also adjust the rule that those that write say five tutorials would also get the same permissions.
I am surprised that I got 10K views in three days.
just to clarify, those are not views (users clicking on the ad) but impressions how many times your ad was shown to people. Still a big number and that is because we have a lot of traffic.
Ah. How about displaying the view count as well?
I can add that too, the issue is that the purpose of ads is also to remind people of tools/techniques etc. for example when you see a Mercedes ad you don't need to click it for it to its job. Clickthrough rates are typically very low but yeah, let's put that up there. Coming up shortly.
added CTR column to the ad listing - CTR = click through percentage is the ratio defined as
but as I said before, this is just half of the story when it comes to effectiveness
now that I see the CTR I am amazed! - a typical ad delivery system has CTR of 0.05%
on Biostar your ad clocks in at 1.4%
Good job, and very interesting result. I guess its about that friendly gravatar (meep meep meep) or a catchy phrase.
So, let's say that an Ad has been showed 100,000 times, and has a CTR of 0.5. Does this mean that it has been opened 500 times?
I am asking because I can't get an integer number of visits when multiplying the CTR by the number of visualizations. For example, this Ad has been shown 461,999 times, and has a CTR of 0.2100. But if I multiply 461999*.21/100 I get 970.1979, which is not an integer number.
the percentages are rounded when displayed, the true percentage is somewhere between and 0.205-0.215
Maybe it's counting several people looking at the same screen (tracked through your webcam) or half a page when it was closed too fast :P
Is it possible to reclassify old posts as ads? I've changed the category of one of my old posts, but it did not show up as an ad.
that is not possible at this time.
Ads also have a separate database object called an Ad Manager that you see on the ad list page. That object is created only upon post creation and won't be added after editing - which was perhaps an oversight on my part but right now it is the way it works.
Add this as a new feature request into the Issue Tracker if you wish.
OK. Thanks for the clarification!
