Hi all,

I'm going to submit my manuscript to a journal. It contains the analysis of a microarray experiment. These data haven't been published yet. Do I have submit them to Gene Expression Omnibus or ArrayExpress (or somewhere else) before submitting the paper? The journal rules for authors don't say anything about this issue but it would be quite logical. If I'm right about that, which database should I choose?

Thanks in advance!

The journal will likely (and should) ask for a GEO or ArrayExpress accession number. In any case, I would highly encourage data submission even if the journal does not "require" it. The submission can be kept "private" until the manuscript is accepted and you can ask for a "reviewer link" to allow reviewers to examine the data in the meantime. As to which database to choose, that is really up to you. For submitting microarray data, both databases are pretty streamlined compared to what they have been in the past.

To add to that: when you submit it to one, it will also be indexed in the other.

Thanks a lot for confirming my ideas!! Another question I forgot to ask: do I have to be the corresponding author to submit the data into GEO or this can be done by the first author? I mean, I can ask my boss to submit the data to GEO but it would be easier to do it myself.

Actually, you do not even need to be an author to submit the data.

No, you do not need to be corresponding author to submit data.
