How To Get The Genus For A Given Species/Subspecies/No Rank

I downloaded all the NCBI taxonomy dumps from the public FTP, and I'm trying to assign the genus to a list of taxon_ids that I got from blasting.

The problem is that some taxon_ids are species, others are subspecies, and others are "no rank". Also, the parent of a species is usually a genus, but it can also be a "subspecies group", or a "species group".

It seems like there should be a tool/approach to do this easily, but I haven't been able to find it. Any ideas?

You can do the above very easily with MEGAN (Metagenome analyzer), plus it draws you pretty pictures, trees etc.

you can also export the reads that support the classification.
