The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

The Department of Infectious Diseases The Department of Microbiology and Immunology The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology The Department of Laboratory Medicine At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 440 million SEK in total assets.

Chandrasekhar Kanduri is looking for an ambitious applicant for a postdoc position for his research group at the Institute of Biomedicine, to undertake interdisciplinary projects in the fields of cancer genomics and long noncoding RNA.

Subject area

Long non-coding RNA (IncRNA) and cancer biology.

Subject area description

The aim of the project is to enhance our understanding of the functional role of long noncoding RNAs tumor initiation and progression.

Job assignments

The applicant will identify functional and tumor relevant lncRNAs from the large-scale RNA-seq data generated from different functional screens in our lab. In addition, the applicant will work on large scale data from RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP)-seq and iCLIP-seq to define functional lncRNA-RNP interactions.

The applicant will also work on ChIP-seq and ATAC-seq datasets to understand the functional connection between lncRNA and their target protein coding genes. Thus, the work will involve programming, statistical analyses and developing new pipelines. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop independent ideas, and to communicate research results in oral and written form. Our lab has access to high-performance computing resources such as Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) and UPPMAX (Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science).

The work will involve programming, statistical analyses and developing new pipelines.

Eligibility

An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment

To be eligible for employment as a researcher, applicants must have a PhD or have attained equivalent scientific competence. The ideal applicant should have a background in bioinformatics, or an equivalent combination of computer science and biomedicine. TThe applicant expected to have bioinformatic skills with the use of well-established genomic tools for analyzing of high-volume DNA and RNA sequencing from tumor data sets. The applicant should also have strong experience in ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq and HiC analyses. Experience in working with Unix environment, PERL or Python programming and R language is also important.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop independent ideas, and to communicate research results in oral and written form.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Employment

The employment is full time and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
