Do you want to develop cutting edge technology to support cutting edge science? If you have or about to finish your PhD or have equivalent experience within Computer Science with an emphasis on Natural Language Processing, we have just the perfect job waiting for you. As part of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), you will get the opportunity to work with the latest technologies and break new ground to the benefit of mankind.

Based at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Copenhagen, you will contribute to the further research and development of our new state-of-the-art informatics platform. By combining artificial intelligence, mechanistic modelling and knowledge graphs we are deriving deep insights from big data to address some of our world’s greatest challenges. Your work directly supports approx. 300 world class scientists in Copenhagen and San Diego in their quest for development of new environment friendly products, better and less energy consuming manufacturing processes, new medical treatments, climate friendly farming, etc. Please note that this position is time limited until December 31, 2023.

Library and algorithm development, natural language generation, supervision…

Your overall focus is to build new and better scientific knowledge. By unfolding your expertise within Natural Language Processing, you will help Scientists to consume, quickly understand and integrate huge amounts of knowledge that today is shared in multiple formats like PowerPoint, Google Slides, Electronic Lab Notebooks, books, etc. Your tasks will include to:

  • Develop new algorithms for relation extraction and summarisation (extractive, abstractive), using (semi)-supervised and unsupervised techniques, transfer learning, distant supervision from the scientific literature
  • Evaluate and improve the performance of NLP models and validate the accuracy of extracted knowledge
  • Work closely with a software engineering team to translate best-performing techniques into production
  • Support and lead graduate and undergraduate students, as well as summer interns in NLP

You will join a multi-disciplinary team with diverse specialties in computational biology, data engineering and software development. The team is geographically dispersed between the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Our culture is characterised by trust, knowledge sharing, joined decisions and helpfulness. Travelling is not part of the job but as we work closely together with colleagues in the US, you must be ready to do some calls outside normal office hours.

Your work will be mentored by our Associate Scientific Director, Sophia Ananiadou. Sophia is also the Director of the National Text Mining Centre (NaCTeM) (www.nactem.ac.uk), Department of Computer Science at The University of Manchester, UK. Although the position will be located at DTU Biosustain, the NLP research will be carried out in collaboration with NaCTeM. The successful candidates will benefit from the vibrant research environments of both DTU Biosustain and NaCTeM.
