Computational Graduate Student - 93491 Organization: MB-Molecular Biophys & Integ Bio
Berkeley Lab’s Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division has an opening for a Graduate Student. The successful candidate will work on a materials science project that will develop chemical restraints on small-molecule structure refinement, tied directly to per-pixel values from sparse X-ray diffraction patterns. The project includes a strong machine-learning component to derive parameters that best fit the chemical structure to the observed data, and it includes participating in the acquisition and processing of X-ray diffraction data from X-ray free-electron sources. This project is a 3 year project.
What You Will Do: • Implement chemical refinement using restraints coupled directly to pixel values from diffraction patterns. • Assist in data collection and processing at X-ray free electron sources. • Maintain a detailed record of work performed. • Assist with documenting and managing code developed using standard source control methods. • Participate in group meetings and seminars. • Prepare research presentations and publications.
What is Required: • Registered full-time graduate student. • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science (preferably Artificial Intelligence), or related areas preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. • Strong analytical, verbal, and written skills.
Desired Qualifications: • Good computer skills. • Familiarity with Python and C++ programming.
Notes: • This is a part time (20 hours a week), up to 3 year graduate student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. • Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates. • This position may be subject to a background check.
