The Department of Clinical Medicin at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as post doc or assistant professor in the field of preclinical MRI as per 1 February 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a 2-year full-time position at Aarhus University’s Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience (CFIN).

CFIN's high field MRI lab is a very active lab with a wide range of preclinical neuroimaging projects. A central focus is using MRI to study brain physiology in awake animals. We offer an exciting position with lots of freedom to contribute to methods, data acquisition work flow, and experimental design. Some time for own scientific projects can be expected.

Research Environment at CFIN

CFIN is an international and strongly multidisciplinary research centre at Aarhus University Hospital in Skejby near Aarhus. CFIN has a state-of-the-art neuroscience facility including a preclinical research facility which houses the preclinical MRI, lab animal surgery, stable and optical imaging labs. The MRI lab holds a Bruker Biospec 9.4T MRI with a high sensitivity cryoprobe for rodent brain.

We provide access to state-of-the art experimental infrastructure, a competitive salary, a stimulating international research environment, free Danish classes (if desired), and a friendly environment with an excellent work-life balance. Aarhus is close by and surrounded by beaches, beautiful forests and other opportunities for outdoor activities. Aarhus is also a young, vibrant, costal city with world-class venues for art, dining, music and culture.

Your job responsibilities

The position mainly involves assisting researchers with small animal MRI (mice) including protocol optimization, method implementation and optimization (in collaboration with the lab head), data acquisition and analysis. The ideal candidate has experience with in vivo high field MRI incl. animal handling and animal anesthesia methods. Experience with MRI methods such as perfusion MRI, fMRI, MR spectroscopy (proton and X-nuclei), diffusion MRI and related data analysis is highly appreciated. Experience and insight into methods such as optogenetics (incl. rodent stereotaxic surgery), device design and fabrication (design and 3D printing) is an advantage. The lab has an active interest in the neurophysiology of sleep so insight into electrophysiology would support future activities. In time the position will also include some teaching responsibilities in AU’s courses in MRI.

Your competences

In this position, you are expected to possess or build the following competences:

  • Broad interest and experience with preclinical MRI in rodents
  • Design of equipment for animal experiments (3D design, 3D printing, prototyping)
  • Programming in Matlab and/or Python. A high level of written and spoken English is essential.
  • Understanding of neuroscience and biology.

As a person, you are ambitious, scientifically curious, and self-driven. You are expected to coordinate and be involved in many collaborative projects. Good communication and interpersonal skills are therefore essential. CFIN is a highly international research environment and applicants are expected to be fluent in English.

We seek a motivated, driven person with a keen and broad interest in preclinical MRI and neuroscience. Applicants are expected to hold a PhD in these or related fields. Applicants for the postdoc-level may apply ahead of their PhD defense but proof of awarded degree must be submitted at a later stage.

You will report to the head of CFIN’s high field MRI lab, associate professor Brian Hansen. If you have any questions about the position, please contact Brian Hansen, brian@cfin.au.dk.

Shortlisting will be used.
