Genome Engineering Research Scientist - 94152 Organization: JG-Joint Genome Institute
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division (https://biosciences.lbl.gov/divisions/egsb/) has an opening for a Genome Engineering Research Scientist to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will work as part of the Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproduct Innovations (CABB, https://cabbi.bio/) and the Biosystems Design Program (https://www.igb.illinois.edu/DOEcenter) (PI: Prof. Huimin Zhao at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign), funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Biological and Environmental Research (BER) Program, and Yoshikuni Group at Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology (EGSB) Division to develop non-model multi-stress tolerant yeasts for production of biofuels and renewable chemicals. This position is expected to perform large-scale population genomics analysis of non-model multi-stress tolerant yeast and genome-wide genotype-phenotype association studies (GWAS). This position is also expected to develop a new CRISPR/Cas9 technology that is used to introduce relevant mutations predicted from the GWAS at the genome scale to develop a yeast strain with improved fermentation performance.
What You Will Do: • Perform, design, and build constructs for yeast heterologous expression. • Perform genome editing of non-model yeast using the CRISPR/Cas9 technology. • Develop a new genome editing technology based on CRISPR/Cas9 to be able to engineer diploid strains more efficiently. • Perform yeast fermentation. • Perform yeast RNAseq and transcriptome analysis. • Perform population genomics analysis using bioinformatics tools such as GATK and DeepVariants to identify SNPs and Indels. • Perform copy number variation and pan genome analyses using relevant bioinformatics tools. • Perform DAP sequencing analysis to elucidate transcription networks. • Perform single cell genomics of engineered yeast population while the fermentation is performed. • Identify collaborators and implement machine learning approaches to perform genome-wide genotype-phenotype analysis.
What is Required: • 5 years of relevant experience beyond the highest degree appropriate to the discipline. • Significant technical expertise in an academic setting and a proven track record for:
- Experience in molecular biology (cloning, PCR, electrophoresis, DNA/RNA purification, CRISPR/Cas9).
- Experience in coding (e.g Python).
- Experience in using various bioinformatics tools, GATK4, DeepVariants, and software tools for copy number variation and pan genome analyses . • Demonstrated experience applying technical, scientific, and engineering principles to evaluate manual laboratory protocols and recommend new technology and/or workflow changes. • Proficient in both wet and dry lab works. • Strong motivation to contribute to the development of the areas of research under the DOE mission. • Strong analytical skills to effectively evaluate data and make recommendations. • Strong ethics and morals to follow National Lab’s work-related policies. • Keep precise and detailed batch records and laboratory notebooks. • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to provide resolutions to technical problems of moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors. • Must be flexible to work a variety of work schedules as necessary. • Ability to successfully work independently and in a dynamic team environment (e.g., integrity, trust, teamwork, interpersonal skills, values differences, dealing with change and ambiguity, strategy, and written and oral communication). • Highly competent in the use of computers and related software programs (e.g., PC, Mac, and UNIX operating systems). • Excellent and effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to summarize experimental results and present at group meetings. • Ability to interact collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization.
Desired Qualifications: • Ph.D. degree in Biology, Engineering, or related discipline.
Notes: • This is a full time 1 year career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.

Learn About Us: Berkeley Lab (LBNL) addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
The EAEI Division focuses on three broad areas: Energy Markets, Policy, and Infrastructure; Energy and Environmental Systems Analysis; and Appliance and Equipment Standards. We develop analytical and experimental methods and tools to assess the technical, economic, and market potential of energy technologies, as well as the associated social, economic, health, and environmental impacts.
The EES Department supports the DOE’s Appliance Standards Program by performing the analyses that underlie the development and amendment of energy conservation standards and test procedure rulemakings.
