Do you want a key role in building the best data foundation for world-class scientists?
Do you have a background within natural science backed by flair for data analysis and knowledge of FAIR principles? Are you at the same time looking for a job with a little extra? A job, where you can develop your skills and personally make a difference for a better world? If so, you have it right here.
You can look forward to being part of a leading research and education institution in Europe where on-going development of skills and knowledge is a part of the foundation. You will have great flexibility, as trust and respect are some of the values we build our results on.
At DTU Biosustain we develop the next generation (bio) technology using synthetic biology techniques. We create novel methods and technologies as a foundation for development of new environment friendly products, better and less energy consuming manufacturing processes, new medical treatments, climate friendly farming, etc. In other words, we try to solve some of the biggest challenges in the history of mankind, and you will get the chance to add your personal mark to this.
Contribute to build and manage a top-class data management setup based on FAIR principles
As part of a new team, you will play a central role in our quest to become leading within research data management with a strong foundation in the FAIR principles and Open Science initiatives. Better data management is simply a cornerstone in achieving better research.
To succeed, you will need to acquire knowledge of the changing and ever-expanding data types of DTU Biosustain (currently comprising: NGS, metabolomics, phenomics, analytical models, among other). This includes minimum requirements for the capture of these as well as international, national and local legislation, rules and guidelines. The work is centred around an agile mindset, where we use a combination of Scrum and Kanban.
To ensure and enable compliance, you will work in close collaboration with highly skilled scientists, subject matter experts as well as our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) Administrator and software engineers. You will also train and support researchers to drive the adoption of research data management (RDM) and the FAIR principles. Your primary tasks will be to:
- Be the contact point for requests from the researchers with regards to FAIR RDM literacy. As examples:
- How to make a good data management plan
- Data storage options (how and where to store data)
- Data recovery questions and back-up
- How to handle confidential data/GDPR restricted data
- Develop and run trainings and workshops for researchers on data management and FAIR
- Monitor metadata and data quality and quantities and act on possible issues/changes
- Monitor and ensure compliance with international, national and local legislation, guidelines and rules (e.g. GDPR legislation, FAIR guidelines and minimum metadata standards)
- Ensure data governance
- Maintain glossaries and develop domain-specific vocabularies, ontologies and metadata schema
- Generate and maintain proper documentation of activities
Depending on your background and interests, you may also prototype and collaborate on solutions for data analysis and processing of biological data.
Natural science degree and knowledge of research data management
To succeed in this role, you must first and foremost like to interact with a great number of people in a very international environment. As change agent and bringer of a new paradigm you must be able to build trust and motivation for adoption of new software platforms, policies and guidelines. This takes an open mind and additional respect for professional and cultural differences as well as the communication skills to tailor your messages to your audience – and sometimes also a dash of pragmatism and patience. Additionally, your CV comprises:
- A Master degree within natural and/or computer science, backed by at least one year of work experience
- Knowledge of research data management, data quality, FAIR and related international and national policies and legislation
- Experience with natural science data analysis
- Interest in and knowledge of IT and software platforms to support RDM
- Motivation for building skills within Benchling and other LIMS
- Basic skills in programming languages like R, python and/or SQL

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain)
Recent progress in our ability to read and write genomic code, combined with advances in automation, analytics and data science, has fundamentally changed the scope and ambition of harnessing the potential of biological systems. Big data approaches and analysis of biological systems are key research instruments at the Center. DTU Biosustain utilizes these advances for microbial cell factory design to foster sustainable lifestyles in relation to three application areas: Sustainable Chemicals, Natural Products, and Microbial Foods.
