(WHY?) Corrupted (truncated) fq.gz files when downloaded from safari

Hi all,

I recently downloaded some gzipped fastq files (fq.gz) directly to my local machine from an online repository (dropbox) and due to my settings in Safari (to open safe files) my computer tried to unzip these files and they ended up truncated (each file should have been ~200MB but they all ended up as 65KB but still "looked" like a fasta file in the sense that the first several thousand lines were present.) I changed my settings in safari so this no longer occurs but can someone explain why this happened? Does it have to do with the difference between ZIP and GZIP?

I'm just trying to figure out the mechanics behind this issue so I can avoid anything like this in the future.

Thank you in advance!

Do you have enough space in disk?

Thanks for the suggestion, but yes, I should have plenty of room in the disk left (~150GB) which should accommodate the unzipped files. Unless I am missing something that shouldn't be the problem.
