Dr. Vikas Bansal’s research group (bansal-lab.github.io) in the School of Medicine at the University of California San Diego is looking for a programmer or software developer to advance the development of computational tools and methods for human genome analysis. Research in the group is focused on development of computational methods and tools for variant calling in human genomes using high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies. The group has developed tools for long read variant calling and haplotype phasing (https://github.com/pjedge/longshot) and estimation of copy number in repeat regions of the human genome using whole-genome sequence data (https://github.com/tprodanov/parascopy). The selected candidate will maintain and further develop these software tools, contribute to the benchmarking of computational methods for variant calling, and implement pipelines to analyze large-scale WGS datasets using cloud or cluster-based computing environments. The ideal candidate will have a background in Computer Science or Bioinformatics or a related field, experience with high-throughput DNA sequence data and strong expertise in programming in C/C++/Python and Rust.
Salary will be competitive for qualified candidates. This position is also suitable for candidates interested in working remotely or contract-based work. Candidates with strong software development background who are interested in getting into the field of bioinformatics are also encouraged to apply.
Requirements:
Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics or related field.
Demonstrated experience in software development (preferably in C/C++/Python)
Experience working in a Unix/Linux computing environment with large datasets
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Desired Skills:
Two or more years of experience in genomics and analyzing DNA sequence data
Strong analytical skills and background in algorithms or statistics
