Dear community members,

I am a PostDoc (NGS-based medical genetics & bioinformatics) in a clinic in Germany and I am close to finish a large project and thus want to move on.

I wonder which groups in medical bioinformatics in Germany recruit PostDocs and you could recommend? I think I learnt all the basic medical bioinformatics (rare disease, tumor analysis, common disease, SNVs/CNVs/SVs/STRs/etc), thus, I want to do something advanced, which includes complex statistics analysis and possibly machine learning.

I know several places, such as several groups in Bonn ( e.g. https://www.gestaltmatcher.org ), but I am rather unaware about such groups in the rest of Germany. Could you please list any groups you know about which suit "ML in medical bioinformatics in Germany" request? Industry positions are also of interest, even though I doubt there is anything large-scale outside of the clinics...

Have a look at the research groups at EMBL Heidelberg in particular in the genome biology unit and the structural and computational biology unit.
Also why not apply for group leader positions (or even postdoc ones if that's what you want) with some of your own projects/ideas?

Thanks a lot! Valid point - but I think my research ideas are very basic. Currently the biggest progress in this area, in my opinion, depends mainly on the datasets available, and they are (especially in Germany!) very dependent on the institute one works in. So I am not even sure how to make a research proposal having no data in hand...

I think you should turn the problem around. Think first about the questions you'd like to address then what kind of data would be needed for this (and for proof of concept work you may not need sensitive data) and finally approach labs/institutions with your plan.
