Research Scientist (Fungal & Algal Program) - 96020 Division: JG-Joint Genome Institute
Berkeley Lab’s Joint Genome Institute (JGI) is looking for a talented Research Scientist to join their Fungal & Algal Program!
In this exciting role, you will lead data analysis projects in fungal and algal comparative genomics and multi-omics including the development of novel analysis workflows for multi-omics data integration projects. Reporting to the Fungal & Algal Program Head, you will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate new approaches with the goal of creating capabilities and resources that benefit the JGI User community.
What You Will Do: • Lead the development of new workflows and computational analysis pipelines in support of strategically important new science areas including comparative genomics and multi-omics of fungi and algae. • Develop and lead independent proof-of-principle research projects that demonstrate new JGI science capabilities to future JGI users. • Use expert knowledge of genome biology and bioinformatics to provide interpretation of genomic and multi-omics datasets and present findings to internal and external scientific staff at various forums. • Contribute to the development of new approaches to study genome biology, collaborating broadly with other JGI and external scientific staff. • Serve as an expert JGI scientist in meetings with external users and provide scientific advice to resolve complex issues arising during project execution and analysis. • Present data at scientific conferences. • Publish data in peer reviewed scientific journals. • Mentor and train postdoctoral fellows, technical staff, and other group members and JGI staff as necessary.
What is Required:
• A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience beyond the highest customary degree in Life Sciences, Quantitative Biology, or a related field.
• Experience with genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, DNA-binding motifs and other omics data integration and analyses.
• Robust understanding of organismal biology of fungi and algae, metabolic processes, and gene networks.
• Strong proficiency in a UNIX environment and use of bioinformatics analysis and data visualization tools.
• Significant experience in using integrated databases and using parallel computing environments.
• Strong bioinformatic skills including programming (Python) and database (MySQL) experience.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex projects including advanced analytical, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to perform research and organize data for publications and presentations.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience collaborating with a diverse interdisciplinary research team.
What We Prefer: • PhD in Life Sciences, Quantitative Biology, or a related field. • Knowledge of platforms/tools for comparative genomics platforms (MycoCosm, PhycoCosm) and metabolic modeling (e.g., KBase).
