We are requesting access to some datasets in dbGaP, and I'm preparing how to download them - we don't have access yet
I'm a bit confused right now because of possibly outdated FAQ pages and instructions. Can someone clarify:
- dbGaP instructs to assign a downloader - is that still a thing?
- SRA instructs the PI to download the .ngc key after approval and pass it on to the people downloading: can anyone with the key download? when, how or why do downloaders need to authenticate themselves then?
- Related: dbGaP instructs the PI to provide a password during data request to decrypt files; is that password still used anywhere or is the decryption replaced with the use of the .ngc key?
- Is Aspera still required in any way to download restricted access molecular or phenotype data, or is everything done via SRA toolkit?
- is the .kart file they mention only required for downloading phenotype information? Can you construct that kart file only through the dbGaP portal, or can you compose it yourself? If you can compose it without dbGaP: does anyone have an example on how it should look like - I haven't found any definitive answer yet.
